in Spartanburg General Hospital after one week's illness. Later Sprouse COWPENS-Mrs. Bessie Jane Carver Sprouse, 74, wife of Later Sprouse, of Route 2 died Thursday at 10 p.m. in Cherokee County Memorial Hospital after two years of declining health and four months of serious illness. A native of Madison County, N. she had lived in Cowpens most of her life.

She was a daughter of the late Monroe and Tilda English Carver. Mrs. Sprouse was a retired textile employe and a member of Blue Branch Baptist Church. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Wilma Pope of Converse: two grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren.

Services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Love Springs Baptist Church conducted by Revs. Billy Millwood. Charles Harrison and Eddie Bennett with burial in Cowpens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be E.

Brannon, 90, of Irwin Avenue, widow of Milledge B. Brannon died Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in Pinewood Convalescent Center after a long illness. A native of Cherokee County and a daughter of the late Martin and Mary Wells Hardin, she was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Greenville. Surviving are three daughters -Mrs.

Mae Cobb of Gaffney; nine grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildren and one greatgreat -grandchild. Services were held today at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church in Blacksburg conducted by Revs. J. C.

Energy Lecture At GHS A demonstration lecture on atomic energy and its uses, operated by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, will be presented at Gaffney Sr. High school on April 21. The program, titled "This Atomic World." is designed to acquaint students with the basic principles of nuclear energy, its sources, and its role in agriculture, industry, medicine, and research.

Bill McCord will present the assembly program, which explains in student terms the structure of atoms and the operation of nuclear reactors as well as such concepts as radiation, fission, and fusion. Mr. McCord has completed extensive training at Oak Ridge Associated Universities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He holds a B. S.

from the University of the South. Sewanee, and an M. S. in biology from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. Specially designed electronic equipment is used during the 40-minute program to demonstrate the sources of radiation, how nuclear energy is harnessed to furnish electric power for cities.

As a Scout Scott served as Troop Librarian, Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader. Scott played football at East Junior High.

His hobbies are swimming, motorcycle riding, and coin and antique bottle collecting. After completion of high school he plans to go into the field of Business Management. Scott's Eagle Service Projects were to help the City of Gaffney with the upkeep of Oakland Cemetery, and to take charge of the flag-raising ceremony at East Junior High for the 1974 school year. Blacksburg Fires Blacksburg--Blacksburg Volunteer Firemen at their regular meeting Thursday night reported fifteen calls had been made during the month of March, five within city limits and ten outside. The calls in the city were two grass fires, two houses and one other. Outside were six grass fires, two vehicles, one house and one outside building.

The firemen also made plans fortheoming show they are sponsoring April 11. The show, Pinter's Variety and Magic Show, will be held in the Blacksburg High School Friday, April 11, at 8 p.m. Advance tickets may be bought from a fireman. $2 for adults and $1 for children under 12. At the door tickets will cost $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children.

Claims One hundred twenty-six initial claims were filed in the Gaffney Employment Office during the week ended March 29. This total was 33 less than filed the previous week and 110 more than the same period last year. Insured unemployment for the week ended March 22 was 2,349, which was 240 more than the week before and 2,041 more than the same week a year ago. AARP Meeting The monthly meeting of Cherokee County Chapter No. 1879, American Association of Retired Persons, will be held April 8 at 10 a.
