The government clamped strict regulations on the taxicab industry today in order to save tiles, gasoline and vehicles. In an order estimated to affect at least 50,000 vehicles, the Office of Defense transportation practically froze the industry in the hands of present operators, and put new sharp restrictions on their operations. The order, effective September 1, forbids cruising for the purpose of picking up passengers; prohibits a driver using his cab for social or recreational purposes, and prohibits the making of commercial deliveries of property. Other prohibitions include a maximum speed limit of 40 miles an hour, or any lower maximum limit in the jurisdiction in which the cab is operated; trips more than 10 miles beyond the corporate limits of the municipality in which the trip originated; trips more than 25 miles from the point of origin t.o the point of destination, ami operating a cab without distinctly marking it as such. No person not now operating a taxicab may place one in operation and no person now operating a cab service may increase the number of vehicles operated.
