HUMPHRIES SHOE CO, Mr. R. R. Brown, of Cowpens, died at his home at that place early yesterday morning. Mr.

Brown suffered a stroke of paralysis on the 4th of January from which he never rallied and although his relatives and friends knew that he could not recover nevertheless they were not prepared for the sad message which arrived yesterday morning. Mr. Brown is quite well known in up until the time of the stroke of paralysis which he suffered, but since that time his condition has been critical. Mr. Brown quite well known in Gaffney and in every part of Cherokee county and his friends are numbered by the hundreds who will be shocked to learn of his death.

Spartanburg county and South Carolina suffers a great loss by the demise of this honored citizen. He is survived by a widow and four sons, Messrs. James Horace and Jones Brown, of Cowpens, and Mr. Ben Hill Brown, of Spartanburg. The interment takes place at Cowpens today.

K. of P. Installation. Mr. Brown Passes Away.

At the regular meeting of the K. of P. Lodge of this city held Monday evening, January 10th, the following officers were installed: B. Gaffney, C. C.

The meeting was one of the most interesting held recently. The newly installed Chancellor Commander made a happy little speech urging the members to better themselves. Col. T. B.

Butler installed the new officers in an impressive manner. Rev. G. P. Watson was a visitor and made an interesting and instructive Mr.

A. B. Smith was appointed to confer with other lodges occupying the hall with a view of making some needed improvements. Mr. Phillips Dead.

Mr. Wm. Phillips, one of the oldest and most influential citizens of Cherokee county, died at his home near Corinth last Saturday morning at 4 o'clock. Mr. Phillips was over ninetyseven years of age and his passing has robbed Cherokee of a landmark.

Mr. Phillips was known from one end of the county to the other, and everywhere he was universally admired, loved and respected. The direct cause of his death was cancer. The interment took place, at Corinth Church Sunday at noon, and was attended by a great concourse of friends and relatives of the deceased. Rev.

Felmet conducted the services. Mrs. Hames Dead. Mrs. Sallie Hames, 'a highly respected and much loved woman of the Grindall, section, died last Wednesday night after a.

short illness. Mrs. Hames suffered a stroke of paralysis some days ago and has been gradually growing weaker until Wednesday -night, when she passed away. She is survived by four sons and one daughter. The interment took place Friday at the family.

Willie Smith; the two-year-old son of Mary Smith, a colored washerwoman of this city, was fearfully burned at his mother's home in this city last Thursday morning about 11 o'clock. It was known at the time that the child could not possibly recover, having suffered internal injury by the fire, but death did not come until late Friday afternoon. It is thought that the child's clothing caught from a piece of burning paper. A New Citizen. Mr.

A. T. Gibbs, of Columbia, has arrived in Gaffney and taken charge of the' Gaffney Garage. Mr. Gibbs 1s an expert automobile man, having spent several years with different manufacturers in various portions of this country and having operated a garage in Columbia for quite a while.
